Selection Criteria

This review is focused on the touch up paint bottle kits sold by the top 6 touch up paint companies. The companies selected for this article all offer a “Paint Finder” search tool to look up your car or motorcycle year/make/model, choose your color and buy directly online.

Note: There are some other established brands (such as Duplicolor, a Sherwin Williams company) that have been selling touch up paint for a long time, however they only sell a few hundred popular colors (think Ford Tuxedo Black), and they don’t have the ability to custom mix any color. These brands are primarily sold in retail, such as Pep Boys, AutoZone, etc. We did not include those companies in this review. However, if you happen to have a car in one of those popular colors this is an option, and you can find them on Amazon.

AEROSOL NOTE: It is safe to assume that aerosol offerings from these companies will offer the same color match, however, we recommend that you buy a jar of touch up paint first to confirm the color match, before buying an aerosol. We will review aerosols in our next article.

Testing Methodology

The most important part of touch up paint is color match, so naturally, we tested the same color from each company. We applied each color over the company’s supplied primer, clear coated it, and then evaluated the color accuracy, by comparing it to the factory color paint on my friend’s 2017 Jaguar F Pace. The color we tested was Ammonite Gray (1AB).

We evaluated everything in each kit, from the color match of the primer, to the applicators and the paint itself (solvent borne or waterborne). There were quite a few very similar offerings, and one innovator. Key criteria in the review was optimization of modern waterborne paint technology, price, and user health.

Note: we get a small fee from the referral link for each paint, so once you’ve made your choice, thanks for clicking!

Washable applicators extend product life for years.

As the latest (and only Made in the USA) entry into the automotive touch up paint market, Scratches Happen applies all the latest breakthroughs in paint performance and low VOC with a completely waterborne paint system (primer, base, and clear). Vibe: The friendly, smart website channels a re-invigorated American manufacturing profile – a facility in the heartland that operates on solar power – positively contributing to the community. Website photos of gorgeous classic American automobiles – and their injured finishes in need of repair, add a timeless quality to this new but serious player in the field.

THE PRODUCT: Of all the companies in this roundup, only Scratches Happen has a totally waterborne paint system, primer, base, and clear (for bottles). Also for bottles, Scratches Happen is the only touch up paint to color match their primer – claiming the exact color match formula relies on tinted primer as part of the OEM color process.

COLOR SELECTION: One of the only kits with almost all of the 2020 model year colors on the site.

PRODUCT RANGE: Includes small bottles of touch up paint and aerosol products, but no pens. The company believes paint pens are a poor application format, due to tips that dry out, and paint that doesn’t flow well after the first use. There are three kit options for bottles or aerosols, ranging from Essential, Preferred and Complete. Just recently the ability to buy a single bottle or aerosol can (without buying a kit) was added to the site.

CHECKOUT: Scratches Happen is no nonsense, low hype, with a smooth and efficient user experience. Once you select your car paint, choosing between kits is intuitive and informative with images of the contents of each kit side by side for comparison.

INSTRUCTIONS: Instructions (in a readable type size) to help you do the best job possible are clear and sequential. We found them under the Support menu.

INNOVATION: The only company to offer OEM color matched primer (instead of just grey primer) – validating their OEM basecoat color match guarantee. They are the only company to offer a full waterborne system of primer, basecoat, and clearcoat. ScratchesHappen is also the only USA kit company with an applicator kit of different brushes, dabbers and toothpicks – the brush in the jar is pretty low tech by comparison.

#2 TouchupDirect

Score 8.0/10

Paint Odor

Score: 8/10

The paint is low odor, but the primer and clear coat have a strong solvent odor, indicating they aren't waterborne.

Applicators/Brushes

Score: 7/10

Paint jars have the brush in the bottle -- which gets gummy over time, and is less precise than separate applicators.

Directions

Score: 9/10

Reasonably detail oriented - but harder to find.

Ease of Use

Score: 8/10

Less control with the brush in bottle and smellier process.

Quality/Price Ratio

Score: 8/10

Waterborne paint, but solventborne primer and clear. Less value in brush in bottle and primer is not color matched.

Reusability

Score: 8/10

Brush in bottle gets gummy over time. TUDCare one year replacement is only for the combo pen products not brush in bottle.

Based in Southern California for 6 years, TouchupDirect offers a variety of touch up paint products featuring waterborne basecoat and solventborne primer and clearcoats with low VOC. Vibe: The cheerful, efficient vibe is convincingly channeled by their sunny California family-owned business profile. A bright green and white website design with pictures of the guys in the paint shop and their origin and mission testimonials echos the California lifestyle.

THE PRODUCT: The environmentally friendly vibe is undermined by the smell of the solventborne primer and clearcoat. These days, we are all used to waterborne house paints at the likes of Home Depot and Lowes, so the harsh smell from the TouchupDirect primer and clearcoat seems out date, concerning, and unnecessary. Also, the single color tinted primer undermines the full color match guarantee.

COLOR SELECTION: As of February 2020, TouchupDirect has still not updated most brands to 2020 colors. Out of 60 auto brands, we only found Honda, Tesla, Toyota and Subaru had 2020 colors. Many other brands only have colors up to a decade ago.

PRODUCT RANGE: The product range includes pen, brush, aerosol spray can, and professional sizes along with a variety of accessories.

CHECKOUT: TouchupDirect moves the user through the checkout with minimal fuss allowing easy edits to the cart and product attributes. Images of the kit contents side by side make comparison easy with dropdown menus listing the contents.

INSTRUCTIONS: Finding the instructions/tips requires a bit of digging. Go to Help > Application > and then select from numerous menu items under Instructions, Tips, Accessories, Color Match, Videos, and Common Paint Issues to view or download information.

INNOVATION: TouchupDirect highlights their eco-friendlier Combo Applicators which are half pen tip and half brush. The idea is novel, however other companies now offer a range of inexpensive tiny dabbers and multi-size applicators that offer even more precision. Many people also complain on the forums that paint pens clog, dry out, and don’t work as well as a jar of liquid paint with an applicator.

Ease of Use

Score: 7/10

Quality/Price Ratio

Score: 7/10

Lower price than #2 is offset by the last-generation solventborne formulation, toxic smell, and no easy complete kit available.

As the 20 year veteran in the field, Automotive Touchup has a solid presence in the market operating out of their facility in New Orleans. Vibe: With a history of mixing formulas for body shops and collision centers, Automotive Touchup exudes an air of proficiency given their experience working with traditional paint formulas and processes. Echoing earlier generation ecommerce sites, the text heavy pages reflect decades of information updates and the extensive array of products to choose from a la carte means the user needs to know what they need and select carefully.

THE PRODUCT: The paints are all solventborne and very smelly. Make sure your work space is very well ventilated. If you are at all sensitive to VOCs and strong solvent smells, a headache is possible. The lack of a tinted primer undermines the full color match guarantee. Because these are solventborne paints, unless you have a much older car, there is a strong likelihood you will be using the solventborne touch up paint to make a repair to your car’s waterborne OEM finish. There are no kits available.

COLOR SELECTION: 2020 colors on the site.

PRODUCT RANGE: Full array of products to choose from a la carte: paint bottles, pens, sprays, professional sizes for spray guns, accessories like solvent, sandpaper, and gloves, and body and bumper products.

CHECKOUT: The color selector works like competitor sites however, then the user needs to choose clearcoat, other items and sizes for each paint component. You need to know what you need, or be prepared to spend time reading directions and descriptions to select the right products and right amounts for the job, and then add the products to the cart one at a time.

INSTRUCTIONS: Directions are straightforward if a little brief. Any questions you have about paint principles, weather conditions or testing the paint will have to be found elsewhere on the site or researched on the internet.

INNOVATION: Their soft, angle-cut brush inside the bottle is now superseded by the finer, variable sized applicators offered by competitors, which are easier to handle. Their proprietary clearcoat formula is now rivaled in gloss quality and ease of use.

#4 ColorNdrive

Score 6.7/10

Paint Odor

Score: 5/10

Toxic odor emanating from box.

Applicators/Brushes

Score: 8/10

5 applicators (one size) in kit.

Directions

Score: 8/10

Clear succinct instructions (in a hard to read small type size) but missing cleanup directions.

Ease of Use

Score: 7/10

Longer stiff brush bristles; a very smelly process.

Quality/Price Ratio

Score: 5.3/10

Expensive, toxic odor, no clearcoat, and a handful of non-reusable applicators.

Reusability

Score: 7/10

Only 5 applicators, so you will need to purchase more applicators to use up all the paint.

ColorNdrive is a German company that operates through 3 hubs worldwide with one in the USA. Vibe: While the site has an international feel and is well-organized with glossy product shots, the marketing hype describing cars is downright painful. To wit “Wild paint eating contaminants like acid rain and bird do hunger for your clear coat and paint.” Your car is subjected to such unfortunate adverbial assaults that you’ll flee from the oncoming sentence. Navigation is otherwise well-organized and full-screen videos lend an air of practicality and competence.

THE PRODUCT: Both #4 ColorNDrive and #5 Chipex are similar products designed to very quickly cover up small scratches and dings. The product comprises (1) a correcting/cleaning solution (solvent based), (2) base color, and (3) wax/polish to buff it out. Notably absent from these types of products is a clear coat to match the gloss of the rest of the car. Instead, ColorNDrive skips clear coat and provides polish and wax to buff out the repair. We found that while ColorNdrive covered the damage with base color, it was challenging to fully level the paint in the scratch with the surrounding paint and the repaired area didn’t fully match the gloss of the surrounding area. Running a gloved finger over the wet paint to fill in the void (per instructions) can be tricky. It’s easy to wipe the paint right out of the void when wet.

COLOR SELECTION: 2020 model year colors are not available on the paint selector.

PRODUCT RANGE: The product range covers 4 kits.  The Basic Kit is the second most expensive of all companies in the round up. Each kit, including the basic kit, comes with wax, paste and “other materials for application” and is packaged in a neat box.

CHECKOUT: ColorNdrive has a color selector to find your car paint. The contents of each kit are listed out, but you’ll need to click through the different kits to compare contents. The item called “Other materials necessary for application” listed for each kit is vague.

INSTRUCTIONS: Multilingual instructions are found in the kit. The 3 step process is succinct and easy to understand. The print is very small. Alternatively, go to Touch Up Paint > User’s Guide and scroll down to Application Steps.  The video is helpful to illustrate the steps. Cleanup instructions are missing so disposal of rags and reusability of the applicators is unclear.

INNOVATION: ColorNdrive highlights their patented Clear N Correct solution. The solution is a solvent that wipes away excess paint and imperfections in paint application. It’s not as easy as it sounds though and you have to apply just the right amount of pressure to fully level out the excess paint surrounding the damaged area. As a lacquer/solvent based paint, the premise relies on a last generation paint formulation – solvent based paint. ColorNdrive paint is not waterborne paint which has a more forgiving application window allowing you to correct mistakes as you see them, eliminating the need for a Clear N Correct solution.

Directions

Score: 8/10

Score: 7/10

Quality/Price Ratio

Score: 5/10

Reusability

Score: 7/10

You will need to purchase more applicators to use up all the paint.

Chipex is an 11-year-old British company with offices in Delaware as well. The company aims their products at “road rash” damage where the paint has been pitted by stone chips. The products are not designed to repair deeper scratches or larger damaged areas. Vibe: Videos and before-and-after shots convey competency and process integrity, while the range of car care products conveys a full service high-end vibe. Navigation is simple and intuitive.

THE PRODUCT: Both #5 Chipex and #4 ColorNDrive are similar products designed to very quickly cover up small scratches and dings. The product comprises (1) a blending solution (solvent based), (2) base color, and (3) polish to buff it out. Notably absent from these types of products is a clear coat to match the gloss of the rest of the car. Instead, Chipex skips clear coat and provides polish to buff out the repair. The system is best suited to small surface level chips, blemishes and small scratches because any deeper scratch down to the metal body of the car would require primer to fill in the scratch first.  Chipex contends their repair system fills the void between traditional DIY repair kits which provide only best match paint and complete resprays that are unnecessary and expensive. But this reasoning is at best somewhat dated as now several other DIY touch up paints on the market (included in this round up) also claim 100 color match guarantee and those paints handle the small dings (like Chipex) as well as key scratches, scuffs, and large wide scratches that Chipex advises clients to visit a body shop for.

COLOR SELECTION: 2020 model year colors are not available on the paint selector.

PRODUCT RANGE: Chipex offers 3 kits nicely packaged in a handy storage can and an array of accessories including cleaners, shampoo, detailer are available for purchase on the site. The paint and blending solution can also be purchased individually.

CHECKOUT: Chipex provides an efficient checkout process that offers 3 possible kits. Each kit contains brushes, nitrile gloves, paint removal cloth, microfiber cloth and instructions. Kit images side by side help users see and compare kit contents.

INSTRUCTIONS: Instructions for the 3 step process come in the kit. Advice and tips in the instructions cover do’s, don’ts, prep, drying time and other FAQs. The website offers a helpful video to illustrate the steps. Materials cleanup instructions are missing so disposal and reusability of the applicators is unclear.

INNOVATION: Innovation, Chipex’s claim to fame is a 3 step paint, blend, polish process that aims to eliminate the primer and clearcoat steps. The blending solution is supposed to do the work for you by removing excess paint. It’s not easy though to apply just the right gentle pressure to wipe away the excess paint. Chipex is not waterborne paint which has a more forgiving application window allowing you to correct mistakes as you see them, eliminating the need for a blending solution.

#6 PaintScratch

Score 6.3/10

Paint Odor

Score: 5/10

Very smelly

Applicators/Brushes

Score: 7/10

Brush in bottle.

Directions

Score: 6/10

Poorly organized.

Ease of Use

Score: 7/10

Less control with the brush in bottle and very smelly process.

Quality/Price Ratio

Score: 6/10

Expensive for a last-generation product, not low-VOC or waterborne, and no easy complete kit available.

Reusability

Score: 7/10

After repeated usage, the caps get gummed up with dried paint making it increasingly difficult to remove the jar cap.

As the legacy entry in the touch up paint market, PaintScratch along with their paint mixing partner San Leandro Color brings 50 years of experience in making and using automotive paint. Vibe: As might be expected from a vendor around this long, it’s a cluttered site with many customer testimonials sprinkled throughout along with boxes for ordering and contact. The navigation is a bit confusing because the menus change depending on what page you are on. Bring your mental breadcrumbs.

THE PRODUCT: The paint is very smelly – not surprising because this is lacquer paint. The one kit available includes thinner for cleanup, thinning and wiping off mistakes. PaintScratch advises that this is a very toxic product so use goggles, respirator and rubber gloves. If you are at all sensitive to VOCs and strong solvent smells, a headache is possible. Because these are solventborne paints, unless you have a much older car, there is a strong likelihood you will be using the solventborne touch up paint to make a repair to your car’s waterborne OEM finish.

COLOR SELECTION: 2020 colors on the site.

PRODUCT RANGE: As for product range, the age of this company lends itself to a broad product offering with spray, non-metal spray, and pen products. There is an extensive array of product sizes, including professional sizes, for each step in the coating process, so you have many products to choose from in basecoat, clearcoat, primers and solvents, accessories, and safety products. For a straightfoward DIY touch up paint job, it’s hard to tell what to pick, unless you go with the one bottle kit and remember to buy primer [not included and not color match tinted], and gloves, and maybe tack cloth.

CHECKOUT: The color selector works like competitor sites. Once the user selects a base kit, you can add accessories and other products to your order one by one.

INSTRUCTIONS: The Directions page scrolls through how to repair car paint, detailed touch up paint directions, touch up paint tips, suggestions, and tricks, and additional touch up paint directions and tricks, and then tri-coat car paint repair directions. It’s time consuming to find what you want.

INNOVATION: There is less to be excited about. The paint formulations are not waterborne and in fact pretty smelly, indicating last generation paint compositions and solvents. Not surprisingly, the site fails to document VOC levels.

TouchUpPaint.com: The Authority on Automotive Refinish

About Us

TouchUpPaint.com has launched its new DIY touch up paint how-to website.  Initially focused on how to choose a touch up paint kit, and how to use it to get great results, the site will expand into broader automotive refinish topics including scratch removal (without paint), protective coatings (new ceramic-based products) and related DIY techniques and products.

Touchuppaint.com enters the market with a “quality over quantity” approach to website content. Using practical repair experiments on real body panel scratches and chips, input from industry veterans, interviews with paint manufacturers and engineers, our experienced technical writers go into the science and practice of automotive paint refinish, restore and protection.

The touch up paint kit review analyzes and compares six touch up paint kits from established companies.

As car lovers ourselves, we found hard-to-follow instructions, hard to compare products, and no clear source to explain things like:

  • Solventborne vs. waterborne, and why does it matter?
  • Application techniques
  • Primer tinting and does it matter?
  • Leveling the clear coat
  • Do I sand first?
  • How do all these kits compare on features and price?

We aim to answer these questions and more. We hope you find the content helpful as you navigate the world of aftermarket automotive refinish and restoration.
